Beyerskloof-Bouwland - Wine from Stellenbosch
Thirty years ago - a generation ago - the brand that has become synonymous with Pinotage was "born" when the first vineyard was planted on the small homefarm on Koelenhof Road, purchased in 1988.
After acquiring 100 hectares in the Bottelary Winelands of Stellenbosch in 1997, the landholding expanded in 2018 with the purchase of 50 hectares of vineyards known as Kriekbult, between the winery and Simonsberg, which is visible from the terrace of the Bistro at Beyerskloof.
In the 30 years since Beyers Truter put his hands in the soil and planted the first vines on home soil, you could admire the growth and development. It's exciting to think about what the next 30 years might bring as Anri and the Beyerskloof family push the envelope viticulturally and in the cellar. Perhaps there is even another expression of Pinotage in the making?
The estate vineyards
Beyerskloof-Bouwland's vineyards are located in the Stellenbosch region, one of South Africa's most important wine-growing regions. It is also home to an oenology university, the cadre of South African winemakers.
Three vineyards belong to the estate: Beyerskloof Farm, Beyerskloof Bottelary Farm and Kriekbult Farm. The grape varieties that are grown here are:
- Pinotage
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Merlot
- Shiraz
- Cinsault
- Pinot Noir
Beyerskloof-Bouwland is part of the Faith Fund, which is dedicated to raising awareness of the historical alcohol abuse that is very prevalent among harvesters in South Africa, and to helping children who have been harmed by alcohol before birth in school and in life in general.
