Crossing boundaries is the motto of the winery Bernhart. The open approach to different ways of living life is perceived here as enrichment. This manifests itself in the estate's vineyards, which are located in both the Palatinate and Alsace. The love of wine and good life also connects across borders. The winery Bernhart is today managed by Sabine and Gert in the 4th generation.
Winery Bernhart - Two countries, one dream
Although the vineyards have been in the family for 100 years, it was not until the parents Willi and Wilma gave up the mixed farm in 1971 that they turned entirely to viticulture. They did not have any specific viticultural knowledge, learning by doing was the order of the day. They then passed on the valuable knowledge they had acquired to the next generation.
Bernhart has been a member of the VDP since 2004. The family can rely on a team with many years of experience, whose dedication has already secured them remarks in magazines such as Gault Millau, Eichelmann and Vinum.
Bernahrts vineyards - the best for every grape
Today, the estate's vineyards cover 17 hectares, 12 of which are located in the French Alsace region. The different soil types of the total of 5 sites help the Bernharts to have the ideal terroir available for each grape variety:
Calcareous marl, on which Burgundy varieties grow
sandy soils for Riesling, Portugieser, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc
Auxerrois is also in the mix, digging its roots in soils of clay marl and Letten (sandy clay with lime content).
Careful treatment of nature at Bernhart
Three of the five sites are classified as first sites by the VDP, namely Sonnenberg, Wormberg and Finstergasse. The remaining two named Rädling and Kostert can boast classification as Große Lage.
Manual labor in the vineyard is a matter of course for the Bernharts, as is the careful treatment of nature in general: the Bernhart winery practices organic viticulture to promote biodiversity and natural balance, which in turn benefits the wine.
