The biggest and most important wine award from Germany: the Berlin Wine Trophy

The Berlin Wine Trophy is awarded twice a year by DMW (Deutsche Wein Marketing) as part of the Berlin Wine Fair and is held under the auspices of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV). Advantageous for winemakers and wineries: dates for the event are set so that they fall between harvest and high-sales months. A total of around 14,000 wines, 7,000 per event, are tasted and evaluated every year. The wines are tasted blind and under the supervision of a notary. Only 30% of the wines ultimately receive the honor of winning a medal. The medal scheme consists of gold and silver. In addition, the Berlin Wine Trophy winners award the best wines with the Grand Gold.

In addition to the medals of the summer and winter competitions, a special prize is also awarded. Here there are numerous categories in which only the very best producers, merchants and wines receive the coveted award.

The Berlin Wine Trophy schedule

  • Months before the Berlin Wine Trophy starts, winemakers and wineries register their wines. Participation is limited to 7,000. In this way, OIV wants to maintain the quality approach. Also, the 30% rule is to ensure that the medals are a tribute and not distributed inflationary.
  • Prior to the tasting, the competition staff receives wines from participating producers on a daily basis. After the wine is inspected and identified, each bottle is assigned a unique code so that there is no confusion later in the tasting.
  • Since the wines often arrive long before the actual event, they must be stored properly. There is a separate storage room for each type of wine, which is suitably air-conditioned. The wines are stored in an upright position. Possible sediments thus sink to the bottom of the bottle.
  • All wines are professionally photographed. These photographs are made available to the wineries free of charge. One added value among many for the participants of the Berlin Wine Trophy. Because DMW supports the prize winners with a lavish online and offline marketing concept. In addition to the prestigious award, this is another reason for wineries to enter their wines in the competition.
  • Shortly before the tasting days, the team, with the support of patrons OIV, UIEO and VINEOFED, packs similar wines into so-called flights. This is to make conditions fair for everyone, as the 400 or so jurors will not be confused with different varieties, for example.
  • Now it is up to the jury, consisting of sommeliers, oenologists, merchants, journalists and winemakers, to taste the wines over several days. Based on the patrons' guidelines, the participating wines will be evaluated by blind tasting using a 100-point system. Among the categories of the Berlin Wine Trophy are then red wine, white wine, rosé wine, Vinho Verde, sparkling wine, sweet wine and more. By the way, the individual tasters have no idea whether the wine in front of them will win a medal. They can only give their own evaluation. Ultimately, it is up to the totality of the tasting notes which wines receive a medal.

Berlin Wine Trophy medals

Winners of the Berlin Wine Trophy are awarded medals. The medals differ according to the number of points required and thus the quality of the wine.

  • Silver medal: 82 to 84 points
