Azienda Santa Cristina in the historic valley of Val di Chiana
The Santa Cristina winery was founded in 1946 by the Marchesi Antinori and is still a firm reference point for wine growing in the region. From the winery you can enjoy a splendid view of the historic town of Cortona, not far from Siena and Perugia, in the fertile valley of the Val di Chiana, in southern Tuscany.
In ancient times the Etruscans already produced wine here, Pliny the Elder praises a white wine from Cortona, the pleasure-loving Renaissance Pope Paul III bought plenty of wines from these vineyards and many an Italian poet found inspiration in the "splendid wines" from Cortona.
Azienda Santa Cristina - Terroir and Quality
The first vintage of Santa Cristina was pressed in 1946. The soils are mainly composed of sandstone, marl and shale, deposits of gravel and clay, little calcareous, balanced in proportion and composition of clay, loam and sand of different granulometry. Santa Cristina has always identified with the terroir and the typical grape varieties of this region.
Respect and care in the care of the vineyards and in the work in the cellar, constant confrontation with the autochthonous and international grape varieties, spirit of innovation, knowledge of the close relationship between vineyard, terroir and people, have always been the foundations of the simple philosophy of the winery Santa Cristina and guarantee intact quality.
The new wine cellar for Santa Cristina wine
With the new wine cellar, Santa Cristina takes another step in its long winemaking tradition. In 2006, after two years of construction, the new cellar will be inaugurated and will be named after the historic "Santa Cristina", which was first vinified in 1946. It represents the production philosophy of the winery, advanced technology combined with the constant search for quality in harmony with ancient tradition and love for the land. The visit to the winery allows you to experience all the phases of winemaking, from the moment the grapes arrive from the vineyard, the barrique cellar where the wines mature, to bottling and shipping.
