Meininger Verlag, based in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, has focused on topics related to wine, the wine industry and beverages. With Mundus Vini, a competition was created that attracts over 12,000 samples year after year. Wines compete in Mundus Vini in a variety of categories, with only the best wines earning the coveted Grand Gold. The stated goal of the competition is to recognize and promote the quality of wines. And finally adorning the label with a medal not only helps the customer make a choice, it is also a confirmation of the dedicated work of the producer.
How does Mundus Vini evaluate wine?
Since 2014, the Mundus Vini competition has been held twice a year. Once at Pro Wein in February and a second time in August. A team of up to 7 judges blind tastes the samples. Oenologists, winemakers, merchants, sommeliers and journalists, both national and international, evaluate still wines, sparkling wines and fortified wines using a 100-point scheme. Aroma, taste, appearance, harmony and the overall impression are included in the final score. Medals are awarded to a maximum of 40% of the wines entered in each category. Whether Silver, Gold or Grand Gold - the points achieved decide.
Silver, Gold and Grand Gold at the Mundus Vini Tasting
Silver - for a silver medal, the wine must score at least 85 points. If several samples receive 85 points or higher, only the best rated wines are awarded.
Gold - a gold medal is awarded to a wine that has received at least 90 points from the jury. As with silver, if several wines have 90 points or more, only the highest scorers win gold.
Grand Gold - a whopping 95 points is the minimum needed to win the highest award - the Grand Gold.
Mundus Vini Biofach
With the Mundus Vini Biofach tasting still fairly new, the medal table expands to include Silver, Gold and Grand Gold, which is reserved for organic wines.
Although Mundus Vini has been tasting and evaluating thousands of wines annually since 2001, no wine has yet reached the 100-point mark. However, according to the company, some wines have come very close to this magical threshold.
Also somewhat curious; Mundus Vini evaluates wine in different categories, including, for example, wines of an inexpensive price category. So it can happen that a cheap wine wins a gold medal, an expensive but possibly better wine on the other hand goes empty.
