The Decanter is not only dedicated to winemakers and wineries, but also provides vintage assessments and wine recommendations. The Decanter's authors include renowned names such as Michael Broadbent, Jancis Robinson and Steven Spurrier. In addition, the Decanter World Wine Awards are held annually. The Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) are being held for the 19th time. Only top wine experts from all over the world judge here.

DWWA - Decanter World Wine Awards

For producers a great honor, for wine drinkers one of the most understandable and reliable source of recommendations. Decanter tastes thousands of wines of all varieties each year and awards coveted medals in 3 rounds. Although based in London, Decanter is an international affair. The jury is made up of experts from different disciplines and nationalities. The participants also come from all corners of the world, proving the scope of the competition. The magazine is published in over 100 countries, and the digital platform is visited by 2 million people a month. Clearly, Decanter is a world-class wine magazine.

What do Decanter medals mean?

Decanter judges taste over 18,000 wines from 56 countries each year. Only the best receive a medal. Last year, only 635 wines won Gold medals - 3.51% of the entrants. Platinum won only 179 wines. And the highest award - Best in Show - was given to only 50 wines. But what do the individual awards mean?

  • Bronze - 86 to 89 points: well done, solid, satisfactory
  • Silver - 90 to 94 points: high quality, an exciting wine with personality
  • Gold - 95 to 96 points: exceptional and memorable wine
  • Platinum - 97 to 100 points: All gold winners are tasted again. The best of them receive Platinum
  • Best in Show - All Platinum winners are tasted again. The best of these receive Best in Show in their category.

How does Decanter judge?

After winemakers and wineries send their wines to the Decanter team, they are divided into so-called flights. Regions, grape variety, wine style are just some of these categories. The wines are also divided by price, so they are only compared to similar examples.

Price classes

  • Price class A up to 9,99 £ Entry Level
  • Price class B 10 - 14,99 £ Mid Range lower
  • Price range C 15 - 19.99 £ Mid Range upper
  • Price range D 20 - 29.99 £ Premium
  • Price range E 30 - 49.99 £ Super Premium
  • Price range F 50 £ + Boutique/Icon

In the first round, all wines are tasted blind and evaluated in various facets, such as taste, color and character. The result is reflected in points that finally decide which and if a medal is due.

The second round calls the 4 Co-Chairs to the scene. Together with the Regional Chairs, experts from the respective regions, all gold winners are tasted again. The best wines are awarded the Platinum medal.

The final will bring together all the Platinum winners once again. The 4 Co-Chairs will decide on the best of the best in each category during a final tasting. These wines may crown themselves with the prestigious title of Best in Show - an indication of the very highest quality.
