With almost 1,000 years of wine-related family history, the Attems winery in Friuli-Venezia Giulia is exceptional. Despite the long tradition, however, the wines convince above all with light-footed freshness and a young as well as modern attitude.
Winery Attems - A millennium of tradition
The origin of the wine tradition in the house of the Counts of Attems lies in 1106 when Konrad de Attems received the land as a gift from the Bishop of Salzburg. Wine growing was already practiced here at that time. The commercial production of wine in the countryside near Gorizia began only in 1935, when Douglas Attems inherited the farm and brought a new understanding of quality and at the same time opened the market.
Ideal conditions for domestic and international vines at the Attems winery
Attems ' vineyards are located less than 15 kilometers from the Adriatic Sea and thus receive just the right amount of dry summer warmth, which of course is particularly beneficial to the white vines. The combination of the proximity of the Alps and the Adriatic, the coast and the hinterland, the Mediterranean dryness and the European moderation, made the winegrowers of the region understand already hundreds of years ago that these are ideal conditions also for international vines, which were then cultivated very successfully.
The Attems Cicinis
Douglas Attems realized that plenty of sunshine and an ideal microclimate with an optimal temperature change were the best basis to stand out from the competition. With the Attems Cicinis, the estate also quickly created its own little white wine niche. Cicinis is the name of a single vineyard in the Collio, an exceedingly rich sub-region of Friuli. The Cicinis itself is a crisp cuvée of Sauvignon Blanc that seduces with strong herbs, white flowers and exceedingly aromatic fruit. With this small noble white wine, a wonderful business card for the Collio was created.
Seeing new ways and going into the future
Count Douglas remained in the day-to-day business until 1999, when the following generation took an important step into the future: since 2000, the blue bloods have been working with the Marchesi de' Frescobaldi winery - one of the largest Italian wine producers.
The Attems winery stands for wine enjoyment without a lot of fuss. Even if you are more of a white wine connoisseur, because that's what this region does best: Red wine, like the Attems Merlot, will take your palate on a new journey of discovery. Still, nothing beats the sparkling joie de vivre of white wines. No easy decision, then.
