The Amalaya Malbec Tinto by Bodega Colomé presents itself in dark red and with purple reflections in the glass. The nose captivates with great fruity elegance. Notes of blackcurrants, plums, some blackberry and other dark berries (elderberries come to mind) determine the first impression.
On the palate, the Amalaya Tinto by Colomé is no less convincing. It is fruity and spicy, with good structure, juice and round, ripe tannins. In the finish a lot of fruit, a vital, well-integrated fruit acid and again an exciting spice. Amalaya - meaning "waiting for a miracle" in the language of the indigenous people of the Cafayate Valley - is exactly what Donald Hess hoped for when he founded his winery in this very high, barren and inhospitable region.
You have the miracle in your glass!
Vinification for the Amalaya Tinto Malbec by Colomé
The Cafayate is located in the heart of the Calchaquíes valleys, in the northwest of Argentina, at the foot of the Andes. The vines grow at an altitude of 1,700 to 3,300 metres on pediment and flood, sand and clay soils.
The climate is dry with annual rainfall below 150 mm and temperatures up to a maximum of 35°C. The grapes for the Amalaya Tinto are harvested by hand. In the winery, the grapes are finally sorted out again by hand. After a four-day cold maceration, the mash fermentation takes place. This is followed by the biological acid conversion into stainless steel tanks.
The Amalaya wine is then aged for 10 months in French barrels, 40% of which are used for the second time. This gives the Amalaya a lot of spice without too much acceptance of the aroma of the barrels.
