It all began in 1893, when Luigi Cecchi became a professional taster and realized the potential of Italian viticulture. He soon realized that the diversity of the native region does not lie in a single place and origin, but has many facets. The knowledge is passed from one generation to the next and is developed between tradition, innovation and environmental awareness.

At the beginning of the 1960s, the Cecchi family expanded its holdings by acquiring the Villa Cerna estate, which is steeped in history and whose testimony dates back to the year 1000, remains in the possession of the church for many centuries, and is already praised in historical documents of the 12th century for its excellent suitability for viticulture. An enormous historical potential for high quality wines. 

Thus, the historic villa is being restored and a new winery is being built at the foot of the vineyard hills for winemaking and aging. The vineyards are located on the first hill that one encounters coming from Siena on the way to the Chainti Classico area.

Here, old vines of Sangiovese, historically grown, are maintained, but also very new clones of Sangiovese, selected according to the most modern criteria, are planted, ideally suited to the given soil conditions. The perfect exposure to the sun, favors the best ripening, the weathered soils dating back to the Pliocene have clay, limestone, yellow sand and marine fossils. Terroir and climate are reflected in the wine: fine florality, generous on the palate, warm and always supported by a suitable acidity.

The winery produces only two wines, the Chianti Classico and the accompanying Riserva, in which all the power and essence of Chianti Classico are reflected.

In the 90's, the two brothers Andrea and Cesare Cecchi, in collaboration with two experienced restaurateurs, enriched the historic Villa Cerna winery with an elegant and modern restaurant.
