Abadal Winery - Top Wines from Catalonia
In the middle of Catalonia, just 60 km northwest of Barcelona, at the foot of the famous Montserrat mountains, is the Pla de Bages wine region. Relatively unknown until recently, the area owes its reputation to the Abadal winery. This young and quite small wine-growing area covers only 600 hectares and received its "DO" status only in 1995. Abadal is owned by the Roqueta family and is now highly praised by international wine critics, making it already one of the top wineries in Catalonia. Responsible for this is not least the young and dynamic team around Ramon Roqueta and the oenologist Joan Soler, who produce Spanish wines with excellent taste.
The vineyards of Abadal are located at an average altitude of 400 meters above sea level and are characterized by a Mediterranean continental and low mountain climate. The microclimate, with low rainfall and greater temperature variations than in the neighboring Penedés, makes this region particularly suitable for viticulture. The wines of Abaldal have a very special characteristic with their balsamic notes of lavender, thyme and rosemary. These herbs grow in the forests near the vineyards. Also, the soil and climatic conditions make for particularly fresh, pleasantly concentrated wines with good aging potential
